A disturbing 999 call reveals the moment a murderer confessed to killing a man four days after it happened.
Anne-Marie Burrowes, 52, killed Paul Knowles, 56, at his home in Peterborough, on October 26 2023.
She did this by punching him in the face and shoving a sock down his throat.
Four days later she rang the police telling them she had killed a man but she did not reveal who this was or where it happened.
But on November 19 she called the police again and she let them know some more details.
In the 999 call, she can be heard saying that she ‘killed him’ and she did not know for certain whether she killed Paul because everybody was ‘tripping’.
She said he attacked her with a bottle and tells the operator to come to his flat where police will find his body.
In a video taken on November 20, Burrowes is seen being arrested by police officers.
She told them: ‘One of them ones where you wish you hadn’t turned up at all, you know, and turn the clocks back sort of thing.’
The court heard that the pair would meet regularly at Paul’s flat to drink alcohol.
But it was on October 26 when things turned violent and Burrowes killed Paul, stole his bank card, and spent money from it at a shop.
When she was interviewed by police, Burrowes said she and Paul were alcoholics and he became abusive on the night she killed him.
She claimed she acted in self-defence because he came at her with a bottle.
Burrowes said it was all a little bit of a blur and claimed Paul was still alive when she left the flat.
A post-mortem examination revealed Paul died from airway obstruction from the sock, and facial fractures.
Nathan Naylor, Paul’s son, said his dad was a ‘hero’ and was called ‘Knobby’.
He said: ‘My dad was my hero. He spent 22 years and one day in the Royal Navy.
‘He was a loving father, son and brother. Such a pure soul and loved by many. Fair winds and calm seas.’
While Burrowes claimed self-defence at Cambridge Crown Court, she was found guilty of murder.
She was sentenced today at court to life in prison with a minimum term of 17 years.
Detective Inspector Richard Stott added: ‘This is a horrific and tragic case where a man has lost his life after being violently assaulted and having a sock forced into his throat.
‘Burrowes’ actions showed there was no other intention than to kill him.
‘Our thoughts remain with Paul’s son, family and friends at this difficult time, and we hope this conviction provides some sense of justice for them.
‘I would like to add my thanks to the police major crime investigation team, Crown Prosecution Service and prosecution counsel for their hard work and a great collaborative effort.’
