Re: “Stephen and Ayesha Curry’s foundation to raise $25 million for student literacy” (Page B1, Sept. 1).
The need for more tutors in Oakland schools is a priority.
The Currys’ grant enables more tutors to be trained. Tutoring for an hour a week is the best gift you can give the students of Oakland.
Please support the Currys’ effort and become a hero to OUSD students.

As Berkeley residents concerned about public safety, civil liberties and government transparency, we strongly support Kate Harrison for Mayor.
Kate is a pragmatic progressive who knows how to get things done. As a City Council member, she co-authored the measure that empowered civilian oversight of the police by establishing the Police Accountability Board. That measure passed in 2020 with 85% of the vote.
Kate has consistently and tirelessly worked to ensure that the police have the tools they need to protect public safety. At the same time, she is a champion of social justice and insists on fiscal efficiency and transparency in policing. She is a rare breed in politics, a coalition-builder who never sells out her values.
Bottom line: Kate is the real thing. Vote for that other “K.H.” — Kate Harrison — this November.

I invite Lafayette citizens to join me in voting for Carl Anduri for the City Council.
Carl has served Lafayette in many ways: planning commissioner, City Council member and mayor.
These volunteer activities have given him a depth of experience, knowledge and understanding so valuable to Lafayette as it faces new challenges in implementing state-mandated housing and zoning rules.
Carl will continue to support our ridge lines and open spaces. He will continue to support our schools and library. He will continue to make our town more pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly. He will continue to mitigate wildfire risk.
Finally, Carl is a careful listener who will show respect for others and who considers all viewpoints before making a decision.

Re: “Forests suffer from wildfires” and “Throngs of people expected to travel” (Page A1, Aug. 29).
Thursday‘s front page featured side-by-side articles, one about the effect of fires on the climate crisis and the other about the big travel weekend expected for Labor Day. How ironic.
What was not mentioned was the effect of so much travel on climate. Should we be celebrating the increase in travel that spews carbon?
A suggestion for the future: rather than traveling all over the world, let’s try discovering the amazing things that are within a short or even a longish drive from our homes. Enjoy a park in another city, a museum and a restaurant you haven’t tried or even known existed — maybe even a bike ride to our destination.
That offers a much smaller carbon footprint, a chance to see what a neighboring community has to offer and, oh yeah, it’s a lot less expensive.

Re: “Harris’ indifference worsens bad situation” (Page A6, Sept. 5).
Why would any veteran or family of a veteran ever vote for Donald Trump after he called our brave men and women in the military, some of whom gave their lives for our freedoms, “losers and suckers,” as confirmed by General John Kelly. It is just unbelievable. He is a disgrace to our country. And to blame Harris for the withdrawal of our troops in Afghanistan that was arranged by the Trump administration and began while Trump was still in office. The Biden administration just continued what was already happening.
How Trump supporters ignore the facts and just blame anybody else shows their ignorance.

Write your politicians — no more offensive weapons to Israel. U.S. weapons make us partners in the killings and destruction in Gaza. Cease-fire now.
Over 40,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli bombings and troops. Israel tells the population to move to safer areas, but later invades and bombs those areas. Nowhere are Palestinians safe from the atrocities inflicted in Gaza.
Seventy percent of homes and infrastructure are destroyed; hospitals and medical personnel are decimated; no sanitation; disease is spreading; polio, once eliminated, is endangering children; people are starving and widespread famine is threatening; mental trauma is extreme. We have seen images of children without limbs, people burned alive and dead bodies piled up in hospitals and the streets.
Now West Bank settlers are emboldened to destroy Palestinian villages. A larger Mideast war is possible that could involve the world. We need a cease-fire now.
