SAN JOSE — A motorcyclist killed in a crash with a semi-truck last week was trying to pass the rig when the collision unfolded on a North San Jose roadway, according to police.
Around 12:15 p.m. on Aug. 29, the victim was riding a 2020 Honda motorcycle northbound on Old Bayshore Highway west of Oakland Road when he tried to pass a 2015 Peterbilt truck also traveling north — and hit the truck, San Jose police said in a news release.
That impact caused the rider to fall and subsequently be run over by the rig, police said. He died at the scene; he has been identified by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office as 58-year-old San Jose resident Edward Kirk Sr.
The truck driver stopped at the scene. There was no indication from police that he was arrested or cited, or driving impaired.
The collision marked the city’s 35th traffic death of the year investigated by San Jose police. It was also the fourth of the year to involve a motorcyclist who died, according to data compiled by this news organization.
