MILLBRAE — San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man who authorities said brandished a gun outside a Safeway on Sunday afternoon.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office said the 36-year-old man they arrested was a previously convicted felon prohibited from having a gun. Authorities said deputies arrested him on suspicion of brandishing a gun, possession of a gun by a person with a felony conviction, possession of ammunition by a felon, carrying a loaded gun on a person on in a vehicle, having a concealed gun in a car and child abuse.
Deputies pulled him over as he drove in the southbound direction of El Camino Real, and the man surrendered without incident, authorities said. They added that they found a loaded gun in the car after detaining him.
They had responded to the Safeway in the 500 block of El Camino Real about 1 p.m. for reports that a man was brandishing a gun in the parking lot. That person then sped away, authorities said.
Authorities did not say immediately what brought about the child abuse charge.
El Camino Real was closed in both directions for about 30 minutes.
