For the second time in just six days, an abandoned newborn has been found deceased in Houston. This precious baby, no more than 60 days old, was discovered lying face down on a blanket at the bottom of a steep ditch.
A lawn crew discovered the infant around 2:00 p.m. on August 20, near Hardy Toll Road in north Harris County. According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the newborn was African American, but they have not yet confirmed the child’s exact age or sex.
The sheriff’s office believes the baby had been there for hours. It remains unclear if the baby was alive when he or she was left behind. They are still looking for the mother and/ or father of the child.
At the scene, HCSO East Region Patrol Bureau Major John Nanny told ABC 13, “There apparently has been somewhat of an epidemic on this lately.”

This innocent baby is the sixth abandoned newborn in Houston since early June.
“There’s been a few of these happen recently, so I’d like to mention the Moses Law – the infant Safe Haven law that allows the mother or the parents to drop a child off at an EMS, fire department, a hospital confidentially to take care of the child,” he added.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating a separate but similar newborn death in a northwest Harris County subdivision, where sanitation workers discovered a deceased newborn in their garbage truck during their normal rounds.
Officials have located the birth mother for that crime. She informed investigators that around Sunday morning, she was suffering from stomach pain and gave birth before fainting. She reported that once she woke up, she realized the baby was unresponsive and dead.
She also admitted to investigators that she was scared and discarded the newborn boy in the trash.
These tragic stories of six abandoned newborns have struck hearts, specifically Leigha Curry’s.
If you were watching ABC 13 back in 1982, you may have seen her story air. Curry was abandoned at birth behind a local Houston middle school.
“To see that, it was emotional for me because that could’ve been me,” she said.
Leigha Curry has made it her life mission to speak to others about the value of Life.
“Your humble beginnings do not have to define what your future is going to be like. You are somebody,” she said.
She highlighted the importance of education about the “Baby Moses Law” so more people know that there is a way to safely provide a new life for their baby. It is her mission for no other baby to have the same story as her, being abandoned and left to die.
These stories emphasize the need for education about the “Baby Moses Law.” Anywhere in Texas, parents can entrust their less than 60-day-old baby to a hospital, fire station, or police station without punishment and anonymously.
