At the Democratic National Convention (DNC) this week, the Democrats for Life of America (DFLA) held a press conference regarding how embracing the pro-life movement could help Democrats regain legislative power.
Democrats for Life of America released a report on the press conference, which featured a panel with the group’s executive director, Kristen Day; former congressman Dan Lipinski; Harriet Bradley, Director of African-American Outreach for DFLA; and Catherine Glenn Foster, President & CEO of First Rights Global, and DFLA board member.
The report, which Day prepared, addressed the need for Democrats to reach out to pro-life voters.
“Democrats must expand our coalition and engage with swing voters who are more reticent to the pro-abortion rhetoric that has dominated Democratic politics for the past fifteen years,” the report reads.

The report further states that the Democrat party must be willing to accept pro-life politicians into its ranks, arguing that some of the party’s greatest legislative victories, like the 2010 Affordable Care Act, “were all possible because of the support of pro-life Democrats in seats that they and they alone could win.”
In January 2025, those pro-life Democrats will no longer be in Congress, “likely costing the party control of both chambers.” However, the Democrats should have “plenty of room for pro-lifers,” the report argues, and if the party is more accepting of pro-life Congressmen and voters it can “win the presidency but also regain its former stronghold in numerous parts of the country” that have become more Republican.
One way to engage with swing voters about pro-life issues is to “listen to Black and Brown voices,” many of whom are abandoning the Democratic Party. The report emphasizes that this is important, as minority communities are “disproportionately affected by economic and health difficulties surrounding pregnancy.”
DFLA’s report also decries Planned Parenthood’s prevalence in minority communities. The organization’s strategy of targeting minorities is “a crass move motivated by capitalist greed,” according to the report.
“Racial justice and equity should include advocating for resources for women to choose life,” the report noted.
The report mentions several policies that Democrats ought to include on their platform “for November and beyond” that support pregnant women. These policies include an expanded Child Tax Credit, support for pregnancy resource centers, and making birth in hospitals free.
Other legislation that Democrats should prioritize to support mothers, according to the DFLA’s report, includes paid parental leave, protections for pregnant students, and hospice grants for families who receive a perinatal diagnosis.
