AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department is looking for a suspect Wednesday afternoon after a reported shooting in north Austin, police said on social media.
Around 3:35 p.m., APD officers responded to the 8500 block of Dryfield Drive for a hotshot call, APD Senior Officer Wesley Belcher said during a media briefing. That area is close to U.S. Highway 183 between North Lamar Boulevard and Payton Gin Road.
Officers found a man with "obvious trauma." The man was pronounced dead on the scene. APD detectives are conducting death investigation. A suspect has not been caught at this time, Belcher said.
APD said the suspect is considered to be armed and dangerous. A phone alert was sent to residents nearby and APD asked others to avoid the area.
Police believe the suspect is a Black man with black, short hair and a muscular build. He was last seen in the 1200 block of Larkspur Road, wearing a black shirt and pants.
APD previously said one of its helicopters was in the same area, helping officers who were responding to the incident. Belcher later said police set up a perimeter after using the helicopter to track the suspect.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
