SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — The City of San Marcos was given more than $897,000 to improve the condition of the Thorpe Way and Springtown Lane intersection, according to a news release from the city.
Construction for the intersection improvement is set to begin in 2027.
The award was given through the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), which is mandated by the U.S. Department of Transportation and Highway Administration. Local funding is allocated by the Texas Department of Transportation, according to the release.
The improvement plan includes signalization at the intersection, new crosswalks and existing sidewalk repairs to enhance accessibility and safety of pedestrians, motorists and bicyclists, the release said.
"This grant allows us to make critical improvements to a busy intersection while minimizing the financial impact to our community," Director of Engineering and CIP Shaun Condor said in the release.
The HSIP is part of the Texas Strategic Highway Safety Plan. Click here for more information about engineering and Capital Improvement Projects.
