CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (ValleyCentral) — TV host and musician Johnny Canales has died at 77. Canales' wife, Nora Canales, posted on Facebook Thursday of his passing just before 8 a.m.
Texas State Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa expressed his thoughts on Canales's passing, "Today, we lost an icon, an entertainer, and a leader in expanding the influence of Tejano and Latino music. My friend Johnny Canales, from Robstown, TX, will always be remembered as Mr. "You got it, Take it Away!"
He was an international star from South Texas, and his show, El Show de Johnny Canales, was initially broadcast to stations in Texas and then across the United States, and later in 23 other countries. He launched many popular performers, including Selena, Bronco, Ramon Ayala, Bobby Pulido, and many others."
Canales was a household name for over 40 years after his show debuted in 1983. The show later became El Show de Johnny y Nora Canales.
