The three-match suspension handed to Curtis Jones following a contentious red card decision during his team’s recent 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur is set to stand, after an appeal against the decision failed.
The incident occurred when Jones received what was initially a yellow card from the match referee. However, the use of VAR (Video Assistant Referee) technology prompted a comprehensive review of the tackle, which eventually led to a change in the decision – the yellow card was upgraded to a red card, causing uproar among Liverpool supporters.
The Merseyside club, not willing to accept the decision without a fight, promptly lodged an appeal to contest the alteration of the card. Liverpool’s appeal, however, proved unsuccessful, leaving Jones sidelined for the next three fixtures.
The decision to increase the punishment for Curtis Jones was made on the grounds of serious foul play. The VAR review identified a level of misconduct that warranted the more severe punishment, further fuelling the debate around the use of video technology in football.
