MARKSVILLE, La. (KLFY) -- Eleven inmates at an Avoyelles Parish detention center allegedly forced their way through a cell door Friday morning to escape a lockdown cell, according to the Avoyelles Parish Sheriff's Office.
According to a news release, the inmates "physically forced" their way through the cell door past a corrections deputy who attempted to stop them.
"Security protocols and a quick response by APSO Deputies rapidly stopped them and they were put back into the lockdown cell. The offenders were never able to leave the DC-1 Jail facility," the news release read.
Each of the inmates, who were not named in the news release, have each been charged with simple escape in connection with the incident because "they intentionally departed a designated area where they were legally confined," authorities said.
The incident remains under investigation.
According to the APSO website, the DC-1 facility can house up to 400 inmates.
