Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations has continued to respond to the recent Israeli attacks on the outskirts of Beirut, calling for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council to address the situation in Lebanon.
Iranian state-affiliated media reported on Sunday, September 29, that Amir Saeed Iravani, Iran’s permanent representative to the UN, has requested an emergency session of the Security Council concerning Lebanon.
According to Tasnim News Agency, Iravani sent a letter to António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, formally requesting this emergency meeting.
In the letter, Iran’s representative stated that the Islamic Republic is seeking “an emergency session to address the terrorist aggressions of the Israeli regime.”
He described Israel as a “warmongering regime” and urged the UN to convene the meeting to prevent the region from being drawn into an all-out war due to Israel’s “ongoing crimes” in Lebanon and across the region.
This comes after the recent Israeli attacks that not only killed the leader of Hezbollah in Lebanon but also claimed the lives of several other Hezbollah commanders and a senior commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on the outskirts of Beirut.
The escalating situation in Lebanon has drawn widespread international attention, with calls for urgent diplomatic intervention. The requested UN Security Council session could provide a platform to address regional tensions and prevent further violence in an already volatile region.
