Officials from the Afghanistan Football Federation have announced that Ashley Westwood has unilaterally terminated his contract with them.
It is reported that Westwood ended his contract due to the lack of budget and unpaid wages over several months.
Following his departure from the Afghanistan national football team, Ashley Westwood has officially signed with the Hong Kong national football team.
The official page of the Hong Kong Football Federation states: “The Hong Kong Football Federation is pleased to announce that Ashley Westwood has been appointed as the new head coach of the Hong Kong national team.”
Ashley Westwood, an Englishman, served as an assistant coach for English teams Blackpool, Portsmouth, and Blackburn during 2012 and 2013, all of which have Premier League experience.
He also has coaching experience with Malaysian club Penang and Indian clubs Bengaluru and Punjab. However, he has not been active in coaching since March 2022.
The departure of Ashley Westwood marks a significant change for Afghanistan football, reflecting ongoing challenges within the federation.
As Westwood takes on a new role in Hong Kong, the Afghanistan Football Federation faces the task of finding a replacement who can navigate the financial difficulties currently impacting the sport in Afghanistan.
