The family-friendly film opened with an estimated $45 million from about 4,000 theaters across North America, per Variety.
Internationally, the movie brought in another $42 million overseas, bringing its worldwide opening weekend to about $88 million so far.
The film is already getting strong reactions from critics and audiences, including a 94% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore.
This could be Pixar’s first major original hit in several years: the last widely considered Pixar blockbuster was Coco, which debuted in 2017 with a $50 million opening weekend, going on to earn $823 million worldwide.
Former Disney Channel star Piper Curda stars in the upcoming movie as animal lover Mabel, “who jumps at the opportunity—or hops, in fact—to try new technology that allows her to communicate with animals in an exciting new way.”
“In Hoppers, the question we’re answering is: ‘What if we could understand and communicate with the animal world?’” director Daniel Chong shared in a statement. “Our main character, Mabel, gets to discover the animal kingdom as an animal, which can be weird and often hilarious. Mabel undercover in the animal world leads to a wild, roller coaster ride of a movie, with all the heart you expect from a classic Pixar film. It’s going to be so much fun to watch in the theater; I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”
