'Paradise' Kills Off [SPOILER] In Shocking Episode 4 Moment, Star Speaks Out on Exit
There was a shocking death in episode four of Paradise‘s second season, with a major character passing away in an emotional moment.
The first season of the show followed the murder of President Cal Bradford and how his Secret Service security detail Xavier Collins (Sterling K. Brown) was targeted as a suspect. The big twist that was revealed during the show was that it took place in an underground bunker following an apocalyptic doomsday event.
In season two, Xavier searches for his wife Teri out in the world and learns how people survived the three years since The Day. Back in Paradise, the social fabric frays as the bunker deals with the aftermath of Season 1, and new secrets are uncovered about the city’s origins.
Three of the first four episodes have taken place completely outside of the bunker.

Episode one of the season introduced us to Shailene Woodley‘s character Annie and how she survived the doomsday event while sheltered inside Elvis’ Graceland mansion in Memphis. She later met Thomas Doherty‘s Link when he and his group invaded the mansion after years of her being there alone. They fell in love during their short time together, but she was too scared to leave with the group and decided to stay at Graceland alone. Eventually she learned, she was pregnant with Link’s baby.
After months of waiting for Link to return, Annie saw a plane crash in the distance. Thinking it was Link, she left the safety of Graceland to find him, but found Xavier Collins instead.
Annie helped nurse Xavier back to life and they developed a pact to find their significant others together. Annie would accompany Xavier to Atlanta to find Teri. And then they’d travel back to the bunker in Colorado, where Link went with his group.
En route to Atlanta, Annie goes into labor and gives birth. Despite help from locals in the area, she died due to excessive bleeding.
Shailene is opening up about Annie’s death.
“There wasn’t a lot of time for her to be intellectual about it. I think that a lot of her experience in her final moments, she had been preparing for,” Shailene told THR. “Because she was medically trained, she knew what the consequences of giving birth could be. But seeing her daughter, looking her in the eyes, holding her young body, and seeing that she was healthy and that she was going to have the fortitude to move forward in life in a way that Annie didn’t, I think, gave her a peace and an acceptance that’s so primal and deeply rooted. I don’t have children yet, but I would imagine it’s deeply rooted in the womb of a woman, this idea of carrying life forward and giving life forward. I think Annie was able to leave with a sense of peace, and because her nature is to be a nurturer, she left on a high note because she was able to be of service to those around her even as her last breath was being taken.”
Shailene knew what her story arc would be when she signed on for the show.
She told THR, “I knew how many episodes and I knew what was going to happen [in broad strokes] — I knew that she was going to get pregnant. I knew that she was going to give birth, and I knew that she was going to pass away. But I didn’t know exactly how that was going to look, and what the timeline was going to be, until I read episode four. It’s so profoundly and poignantly written, that reading it in and of itself evoked every emotion that we needed to bring it alive on the day. I credit the writers who are so brilliant and so in touch with their own humanity, which made our jobs a lot more seamless.”
