Ricky and Jane have had one of the longest-running romances in the entertainment industry, building a life for over 40 years.
The couple first met in 1982 while studying at University College London, and have been together ever since. They moved in together two years later, sharing a tiny place in London’s Kings Cross while they were still setting out on their career paths.
Ricky‘s career would later take off at age 40 with the launch of the British series The Office, and Jane was there every step of the way.
Jane, born in London, built her own career behind-the-scenes in TV, working as a script editor and producer on shows like This Life and Teachers. In 2006, she became a bestselling novelist and has earned many awards and acclaim for titles like Getting Rid of Matthew, Foursome, Over Sharing and Got You Back.
The two have been very open about their choice not to have children or get married. Jane has written candidly about being child-free on purpose, explaining that motherhood never felt like her journey, even as she watched friends become parents and grandparents. And while the two don’t have kids, they do share several pets.
Ricky has spoke highly of Jane over the years.
More recently, he said his show After Life, in which his character’s wife dies from cancer, was inspired by Jane.
“The ultimate for me would be losing my soulmate. That’s the worst thing that could happen to me. So, it’s an imagination, a fiction, that stems from that,” he said.
