Sophie Hediger has tragically passed away at the age 26.
The Swiss snowboarder died on Monday (December 23) after getting swept up in an avalanche in the resort town of Arosa, Switzerland, NY Post reports, via the Swiss-Ski Federation.
“We are stunned and our thoughts are with Sophie‘s family, to whom we express our deepest condolences,” Walter Reusser, Sport CEO at Swiss-Ski, shared in a statement. “For the Swiss Ski family, the tragic death of Sophie Hediger has cast a dark shadow over the Christmas holidays. We are immeasurably sad. We will keep an honorable memory of Sophie.”
Sophie competed in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China, in the women’s snowboard cross. She then received her first World Cup podiums during the 2023-24 season.
