Quentin Tarantino is sharing his thoughts on the Rust set shooting.
Last month, Alec Baldwin was on trial for the shooting and killing of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie in 2021. The gun that Alec, 66, was holding fired, with the bullet striking and killing Halyna.
During the trial, the judge decided to dismiss the involuntary manslaughter trial against Alec over “critical” bullet evidence that was introduced into the case.
Quentin, 61, recently appeared on Bill Maher‘s Club Random podcast, where he said that Alec was “10 percent responsible” for the shooting.
Keep reading to find out more…“How can it be [Alec’s] fault — like either you think he purposely shot that cinematographer or you think he didn’t purposely shoot her. And if he didn’t purposely shoot her, then it’s all f–king bulls–t. Am I wrong?” Bill asked Quentin.
“No, I think I’m being fair enough to say that the armorer, the guy who hands him the gun, is 90 percent responsible for everything that happens when it comes to that gun,” Quentin responded, but did add that “the actor is 10 percent responsible” in this type of situation.
“It’s a gun. You are a partner in the responsibility to some degree,” he added.
“What do you do to test it?” Bill then asked. “They show it to you. If there are steps to go through, you go through them and it’s done with due diligence. And you know it’s f–king for real.”
Quentin then explained that if Alec “went through the steps that he’s supposed to go through, then he [should know better].”
He went on to say that some of those steps would include making sure that “the barrel is clear, that there’s not anything wedged in between” along with being shown that blanks are being used in the scene.
Quentin also noted that if an actor is aware of having “three hot rounds” in the prop gun and is going to do a scene, “if one of the rounds doesn’t go off while he does his ‘bam, bam, bam,’ then he should cut the scene and say, ‘Guys, one of the rounds didn’t go off. I think I’m still holding a hot gun here.’”
When Bill asked why prop guns can’t be empty and have gunshot sounds added in during post-production, Quentin responded, “I guess I can add digital erections to porno, but who wants to f–king watch that?”
He then added that it’s “exciting to shoot the blanks and to see the real orange fire and not add orange fire.”
Earlier this year, the Rust armorer received her prison sentence after she was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter over the fatal shooting.
