California Governor Gavin Newsom has earned a lot of goodwill with Americans over the past year for successfully trolling Donald Trump. And while the tweets are pretty good, let us not forget that Newsom also welcomed Steven Bannon and Charlie Kirk onto his podcast, has fully thrown trans kids under the bus, and once said that anyone expressing outrage over the government’s disappearance of Kilmar Abrego Garcia was just “a distraction.”
As Jezebel’s Contributing Editor Nora-Biette Timmons wrote in August, “Newsom can successfully ape the worst politicians in America because he’s not so different from them.”
On Wednesday, Halle Berry stepped in to remind us all that not only is he a politician who sucks, but he’s a male politician who’s quick to ignore and/or undermine women’s health.
“Back in my great state of California, my very own governor, Gavin Newsom, has vetoed our menopause bill, not one but two years in a row,” Berry said at the New York Times’ DealBook Summit. “But that’s OK, because he’s not going to be governor forever.”
“And with the way he’s overlooked women—half the population—by devaluing us in midlife, he probably should not be our next president either,” she said. Since Newsom is still topping the list of Democratic favorites for the 2028 presidential nomination, I’d also prefer a candidate who dedicates as much time to women’s health as his press shop dedicates to owning Trump on Twitter.
The bipartisan Menopause Care Equity Act made it to Newsom’s desk in 2024 and 2025—if he had signed, it would have required health care policies and plans to offer coverage for treatment options for perimenopause and menopause symptoms. Though after vetoing it again, he did direct the California Health and Human Services Agency to find ways to address menopause and perimenopause in 2026’s budget.
Berry’s been a longtime and outspoken advocate for women’s health and, in 2020, founded Respin, which advocates for more research and public awareness around menopause. When Newsom vetoed the bill for the second time in October, Berry wrote an op-ed for Time, alongside Dr. Pauline Maki, director of the Center for Health, Awareness, and Research on Menopause at the University of Illinois’s College of Medicine, and Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton (D):
The costs of inaction are staggering. Untreated menopause symptoms contribute to an estimated $1.8 billion in lost productivity in the U.S. every year, but the real toll cannot be measured in dollars alone. It shows up in missed workdays, in preventable physical and mental health crises, and in the erosion of women’s confidence and economic security.
Menopause is not a disease. It is a universal transition, one that, when properly supported, can mark a time of strength, purpose, and renewed vitality. Women in midlife drive innovation and lead across every sector of society. Each year, an estimated 1.3 million women in the United States enter menopause. When they are ignored, everyone loses. When they are supported, everyone thrives.
“He vetoed the bill because, as written, it would have unintentionally raised health care costs for millions of working women and working families already stretched thin — something he’s determined to avoid,” a spokesperson for Newsom said in a statement to The Cut. “We’re confident that by working together this year, we can expand access to essential menopause treatment while protecting women from higher bills.”
