Australia defends record on antisemitism after Bondi Beach attack

A father and son shot and killed 15 people at an annual Hanukkah festival on Sydney's most famous beach on Sunday, an act labelled by Australian and foreign leaders alike as an assault on Jews. The father was shot and killed by police and the son is in a critical condition in hospital. While Canberra has condemned the attack, many in the Jewish community have questioned its determination to fight prejudice against them. The government's special envoy to combat antisemitism, Jillian Segal, said... Читать дальше...

A father and son duo opened fire on a Jewish festival at Australia's best-known beach on Sunday evening, killing 15 people, including a child, and wounding 42 more. Authorities have condemned the attack as an act of terrorism, though they have not named the two shooters -- one killed at the scene, and the other now in hospital. However, Australian public broadcaster ABC said the alleged assailant was Naveed Akram from the western Sydney suburb of Bonnyrigg, quoting an anonymous official, and other... Читать дальше...

Cambodia says Thai air strikes hit home province of heritage temples

Dozens of people were killed in five days of fighting in July before a truce was brokered and then broken within months, part of a long-standing conflict rooted in the colonial-era demarcation of the countries' 800-kilometre (500-mile) frontier. Renewed fighting between the Southeast Asian neighbours this month has killed at least 28 people, including soldiers and civilians, and displaced around 800,000, officials said. Each side has blamed the other for instigating the fighting, claiming self-defence... Читать дальше...

Bondi Beach gunmen had possible Islamic State links, says ABC

Police have yet to provide a motive for Sunday's mass shooting, but they say it was clearly an antisemitic, terrorist act. Senior officials in the investigation told the ABC that two IS flags were found in the gunmen's car at the beach, although New South Wales police said they could not confirm the report. Details of the pair are emerging in the hours since the black-clad, 50-year-old father and his 24-year-old son were seen side-by-side on a small bridge, firing long-barrelled guns at people on the beach. Louvre trade unions to launch rolling strike

It is unclear if the walk-out will close the world's most-visited museum, nearly two months after it was victim of an embarrassing daylight heist that saw crown jewels worth $102 million stolen. "I can't guarantee that the institution will be closed. If they do open the museum, it will only be a partial opening, with a very, very limited route, just to say 'we’re open'," Christian Galani, from the hard-left CGT trade union, told AFP. He said the strike, just as Paris is gearing up for the Christmas holidays... Читать дальше...

Asian markets drop with Wall St as tech fears revive

The selling came as traders turned their attention away from the Federal Reserve's monetary policy after it cut interest rates for a third successive meeting on Wednesday. However, there will be plenty of interest in key US data over the next few days -- including on jobs creation and inflation -- that could play a big role in the central bank's decision-making at next month's meeting. Tech firms have been at the forefront of a global surge in equity markets for the past two years as they pumped... Читать дальше...

North Korean leader's sister sports Chinese foldable phone

Images released by state media on Sunday showed Kim holding the phone in her right hand during a trip to a hospital opening alongside her brother Kim Jong Un. Although the brand name cannot be seen in the picture, the phone closely resembles the Chinese brand Honor's "Magic" line, advertised as "the world's thinnest foldable smartphone". The V3 model of the phone sells for around $1,379 -- well out of range of the average North Korean, who analysts say typically earn up to three dollars a month in state-run industries. Iran's women bikers take the road despite legal, social obstacles

Fifteen years on, Ghelich has trained hundreds of women, helping them navigate not only the capital's gridlocked streets but the barriers facing women motorcyclists in the conservative Islamic republic, with a marked surge in demand for lessons in recent months. "This sport was one of my passions, and in Iran it had long been taken for granted that motorcycling was only for men," she told AFP at a training centre in northern Tehran. On streets and at intersections across Iran, women on mopeds and... Читать дальше...
