Since 2022 there has been no head of state in the country and this political vacuum has signifigantly impacted the nation, not only politically and economically, but also in regard to the escalating conflicts in the region. On Wednesday, the Israeli army announced it had discovered the body of a 53 year old Bedouin Arab hostage in the Gaza Strip, who'd been seized in the October 7th attack. Soldiers are now investigating "findings which raise serious concerns" for the life of his 22 year old son, also a hostage. Both were thought to have been alive before this announcement. After two years of a presidential vacuum, Lebanese army chief Joseph Aoun was elected president Thursday in the second round of a parliamentary vote. Addressing parliament shortly after the vote, Aoun emphasised the need for reforms and said his tenure would be focused on national reconstruction and maintaining Lebanon's territorial integrity. The 32-year-old pleaded guilty to a single charge of domestic abuse of his ex-partner, Gillian Hogg, when he appeared in court in Scotland on November 4. He admitted shouting and swearing, tracking Gillian Hogg's movements and sending her messages that were alarming and distressing in nature. Calm had returned to the Chadian capital N’Djamena, a spokesman for the military-ruled government said Thursday after an armed attack on the presidential palace by a 24-member commando unit the previous day was crushed.
A heavily armed commando attacked the Chadian presidential palace in the capital N'Djamena on Wednesday evening, before being overpowered by the presidential guard.
