AI takes centre stage as Mobile World Congress Shanghai kicks off

The jampacked connectivity industry conference saw some of China's biggest companies gather to showcase their latest products and visions for an AI-driven future. Smart device brand Honor on Wednesday unveiled technology it said could detect deepfake scam calls and warn the phone's owner in real-time. Deepfake scam calls -- where fraudsters manipulate images, sound or video of a real person as part of their con -- have been flagged as a growing risk as generative AI use becomes more prevalent. In February... Читать дальше...

Sri Lanka seals partial debt deal after financial crash

The agreement is hoped to allow Sri Lanka to allocate funds to essential public services and secure concessional financing for development, President Ranil Wickremesinghe's office said in a statement. The country defaulted on its foreign debt in April 2022 after running out of foreign exchange, and the unprecedented economic crisis forced then president Gotabaya Rajapaksa to step down. "Sri Lanka reached a final restructuring agreement for $5.8 billion of debt with its bilateral lenders' Official Creditor Committee (OCC) in Paris... Читать дальше...

South Africa ignore near-misses with eye on T20 World Cup final

Despite the Proteas' deep resources of talent, the country has only won one international title -- the Champions Trophy back in 1998. In World Cup knockout games, they have won just one in 10 and have never made a final, be it in the 50-over or T20 format. "The near misses in the past, they belong to the people who missed them," insisted Walter. "This team is a different team. We own whatever is ours to own. And so, our nearest reflection point is this tournament where we've managed to get over the line. Читать дальше...

Frustration, as Poland's same-sex couples await promised legal rights

The Catholic country's main ruling party had pledged to legalise civil unions. Six months into its tenure however, same-sex couples still cannot marry or register their partnerships in this EU member state. And this is despite a December ruling of the European Court of Human Rights condemning Poland for having failed to recognise and protect same-sex couples. That followed complaints lodged by Alcer and Lepianka, among others. Looking back at that when they heard about the ruling, Alcer, 44, told AFP... Читать дальше...

Swap deal for US journalist jailed by Russia?

Russia said on Wednesday that it has sent the United States "signals" about a possible prisoner swap involving detained reporter Evan Gershkovich and that Washington should seriously consider them. Nick Holdsworth, France 24's former Moscow correspondent, says a swap deal remains a likely outcome but remains "a way off yet".

'Forgotten' women Impressionists rediscovered at Irish exhibition

Women Impressionists were often ignored by critics unable to see past their "feminine" subject matter or dismissed as "secondary" figures. The exhibition showcases the work of four of these 19th century artists -- Berthe Morisot, Eva Gonzales, Marie Bracquemond and Mary Cassatt. "It is one of the first exhibitions anywhere to focus on the four women who are key to the Impressionist movement," the director of Dublin's National Gallery of Ireland, Caroline Campbell, told AFP ahead of the show's opening on Thursday. REPLAY: WikiLeaks founder Assange lands in Australia a free man

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange returned home to Australia to start life as a free man Wednesday after admitting he revealed US defence secrets in a deal that unlocked the door to his London prison cell. Assange landed on a chilly Canberra evening in a private jet, the final act of an international drama that led him from a five-year stretch in the high-security Belmarsh prison in Britain to a courtroom in a US Pacific island territory and, finally, home.

Mauritania’s Meulfeu veil spreads across borders

In Mauritania, a dress style known as the Meulfeu has become all the rage in recent years, even spreading to other countries in the region. Colourful fabrics are wrapped around the head and body in a very particular way. Many Mauritanian women have taken to social media to show off their look - an act of emancipation in what is a deeply conservative society.

Rising cocoa prices bring booming profits, violence to Ecuador

Producing around 420,000 tons a year, Ecuador is the world's third-largest cocoa grower after the Ivory Coast and Ghana. But after drought and diseases struck crops in West Africa, prices have boomed for Ecuador's farmers. But despite the hefty profits, the soaring crime rate and gang violence is causing issues for the cocoa farmers.

The government has dropped some of the most contentious initial proposals but has not been able to contain public anger. Vedika Bahl takes a closer look at the bill that sparked the unrest.

Pogacar 'fairytale' inspiring new generation of Slovenian riders

"He is a great role model for all of us young riders," Hvastija told AFP after finishing runner-up in the event organised every June in Komenda, just outside the capital Ljubljana, for riders aged eight to 19 years. With Pogacar eyeing a third Tour de France title to add to last month's first Giro d'Italia victory, his success -- with that of his compatriots Primoz Roglic and Matej Mohoric -- has led to a cycling boom in the Alpine state of two million. "Years ago we had barely 50 kids in the juvenile team... Читать дальше...

French far right’s plan to ban dual nationals from ‘strategic posts’ sparks alarm

If the far right National Rally party wins the French elections on July 7, it has pledged that dual nationals will be excluded from "the most strategic posts of the state." The controversial proposal has caused alarm among dual citizens and drawn criticism from the left and centrists. Interior Minister Garald Darmanin referred to it as a way of "filtering the French" that discredits some 3 million French dual national citizens and others believe it points to the wider discrimination at the heart of party's policies.

South Korea's Gumi City Council announced the robot was found unresponsive after having apparently fallen down a two-meter (six-and-a-half foot) staircase last week. Witnesses saw the robot officer "circling in one spot as if something was there" before the accident occurred, but the exact cause of the fall is still being investigated, a city council official told AFP. 'People don't want mayhem': how crime boosted France's far right

The 24-year-old waiter was afraid that rioters in the northeastern town of Mont-Saint-Martin, where nine public buildings were partially or completely destroyed, would torch his car, as they had dozens of others. His efforts paid off but there was no turning back for Maiani. "The riots marked me and bolstered my political choices," said Maiani, who went from simply voting for the far-right National Rally to becoming the running mate of the party's candidate for a seat in this weekend's parliamentary elections. Giant China basketball teen tipped for top after towering displays

Zhang Ziyu stands 2.20 metres (7ft 3in), according to FIBA, the basketball's governing body. But Chinese media reported earlier this year that she was even taller at 2.28m (7ft 6in). Either way, she has used her height to help the hosts to two comfortable wins at this week's U18 Women's Asia Cup in Shenzhen and drawn attention beyond China after footage of her emerged online. Against Indonesia on Monday, Zhang netted 19 points in 13 minutes after coming off the bench in a big 109-50 victory. ... Читать дальше...

Street artist Obey says French far right 'hijacked' iconic image

"It's so ridiculous it's hard for me to even believe," Fairey told AFP in Paris, where an exhibition of his work is running at the Itinerrance Gallery until July 15. The 54-year-old American is one of the most famous street artists in the world, but is also a long-time social justice campaigner. So he was unimpressed to discover that his image of Marianne, the symbol of the French republic, hangs in the office of Jordan Bardella, president of France's far-right National Rally -- the party leading...
