Gaza civil defence says Israeli strike kills 10 relatives of Hamas chief

The strike hit the Haniyeh family home in Al-Shati refugee camp, in the northern Gaza Strip, said Mahmud Basal, spokesman for the Hamas-ruled territory's civil defence. "There are 10 martyrs... as a result of the strike, including Zahr Haniyeh, sister of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh," Basal told AFP. He said a number of bodies were likely still under the rubble but "we do not have the necessary equipment" to extract them. Civil defence crews transferred the bodies to Al-Ahli hospital in nearby Gaza City... Читать дальше...

The 56-year-old Stimac, in his final press conference, said he had heart surgery because of stress and battled "lies" and people with "private interests" during his tenure. Читать дальше...

The 37-year-old opening batsman Warner had always said the World Cup in the United States and Caribbean would be his farewell to international cricket. He couldn't have imagined going out quite like this. The combative Warner stood tall... Читать дальше...

World not ready for climate change-fuelled wildfires: experts

Wildfires have already burned swathes through Turkey, Canada, Greece and the United States early this season as extreme heatwaves push temperatures to scorching highs. While extra resources have been poured into improving firefighting in recent years, experts said the same was not true for planning and preparing for such disasters. "We are still actually catching up with the situation," said Stefan Doerr, director of the Centre for Wildfire Research at the UK's Swansea University. Predicting... Читать дальше...

'Urgent' for Australia to protect Great Barrier Reef: UNESCO

In a draft decision, UNESCO also asked Australia to submit an update on protection efforts early next year, but stopped short of recommending the reef be placed on its list of endangered heritage sites. The decision, released late Monday, was welcomed by Australia's Minister for the Environment and Water Tanya Plibersek as a "huge win". "We are acting on climate change, improving local water quality, protecting our marine life, dealing with invasive species, and investing a record amount of money... Читать дальше...

Israeli forces launched more deadly strikes, with 13 people killed across two schools and a home hit in Gaza City, according to the Hamas-run territory's civil defence agency. With Israel planning to redeploy some soldiers from Gaza to the Lebanese border, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday pressed the country's defence minister not to allow the violence to spiral. Olympic 800m champion Mu in tears as fall ends Paris dream

The 22-year-old, one of the sensations of the pandemic-delayed 2021 Tokyo Games, crashed to the track at around the 200m mark in the final at Hayward Field. Mu, who was also a member of the USA's victorious 4x400m relay team in Tokyo, crossed the finish line in tears after failing to make up ground following her tumble. Japan's royals: tradition, myths and Instagram

Sun goddess Legend has it that Japan's royals, whose myth-filled history spans 2,600 years, are descended from the Shinto sun goddess Amaterasu. Their divine status was renounced after World War II following Japan's militaristic sweep across Asia in the name of Emperor Hirohito. The family holds no political power under the post-war constitution, but the institution remains hugely symbolic. After Hirohito died in 1989, his son Akihito dramatically modernised the monarchy by marrying a commoner... Читать дальше...

Gender gap fuels disputes as Japan gets joint custody

It was their first encounter since his wife left with the boys a year earlier -- the kind of painful separation that Japan's new parental custody rules aim to prevent. The country enacted laws last month allowing joint custody after divorce, replacing a decades-old system where it was granted to only one side, and almost always to the mother. But the change has proved polarising in a country where campaigners say sole custody acts as a bulwark against forms of domestic abuse courts may fail to recognise. Читать дальше...

Motorists honk enthusiastically to the group from the road as they drive past, and a man on a scooter passing underneath shouts "Traitor!"
