France coach Didier Deschamps didn't give much away Monday when pressed if Mbappé was available for the Group D closer against Poland on Tuesday, when he would have to wear a protective mask.

Hazlewood doubts 'drastic' changes despite Australia World Cup exit

Australia's 24-run loss to India on Monday pushed them to the brink of elimination from the last-four chase before Afghanistan's dramatic victory against Bangladesh nudged them over the cliff. By the time the next World Cup rolls around in India and Sri Lanka in 2026, only one of the current 15-man squad -- Cameron Green -- will still be well under 30. Green, a 24-year-old all-rounder, didn't get to play a game in this World Cup. "There might be a couple of changes, but a lot of the guys still... Читать дальше...

Iran's Khamenei urges 'high participation' in presidential vote

"We emphasise the importance of high participation (in the election) because it is the pride of the Islamic republic," Khamenei declared in a televised speech three days ahead of the vote. "In every election where the turnout was low, the enemies of the Islamic republic have denounced us," he added. Voters have the choice between six candidates, who were selected by the Guardian Council -- an unelected body dominated by conservatives -- from the 80 hopefuls who had filed their candidacy. The three... Читать дальше...

Zaccagni joy but Italy remain unsure of Euro 2024 title credentials

Luciano Spalletti's team will face Switzerland in Berlin on Saturday, giving them four days to reflect on their unconvincing efforts in Group B, where they finished second and five points behind Spain. Italy once again failed to live up to the standard of play expected by Spalletti, an attack-minded coach who bemoaned his team's inability to retain possession and create goalscoring opportunities. The joyous scenes that followed Zaccagni's leveller in Monday night's thrilling 1-1 draw with Croatia... Читать дальше...

Antarctic faces melting 'tipping point' as oceans warm: study

While this type of melting has been previously studied, models used by the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to project the impact of global warming on the Antarctic have yet to factor in this phenomenon. They have also systematically underestimated ice loss seen thus far, said the study, published in the journal Nature Geoscience. As ocean temperatures rise due to human-caused global warming, Antarctic ice sheets are melting, threatening a rise in global sea levels and putting coastal communities at risk. Читать дальше...

Paris prepares to refashion Olympics with urban look

"We are going to the heart of the city and leaving the stadiums," Pierre Rabadan, Deputy Mayor of Paris in charge of Sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Games told AFP. Blinken emphasised to Israel's Gallant the need for post-war Gaza plan

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday pressed Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on the need for Israel to swiftly develop a robust post-war plan for Gaza and ensure the tensions with Hezbollah on Israel's northern border do not escalate further. Washington has repeatedly urged Israel to craft a realistic post-war plan for Gaza and warned that the absence of it could trigger lawlessness and chaos as well as a comeback by Hamas in the Palestinian territory. Agencies struggle to remit aid to Niger as food crisis expected to peak in June

Delivering humanitarian aid in Niger was already a great challenge before the political crisis triggered by the coup in July 2023. But now, local humanitarian organisations that rely on financial backing from international bodies like the EU and USAID have had to reduce their work significantly. Some have been forced to shut down entirely. The most vulnerable are hit the hardest, just as the food crisis – expected to peak in June – is set to be the worst of the last 10 years.
