Seoul summons Russian ambassador as Putin says may send weapons to North Korea

South Korea summoned Russia's ambassador to Seoul Friday to protest a defence deal signed by President Vladimir Putin and North Korea's Kim Jong Un during a visit to Pyongyang this week. Putin also said this week that Moscow did not rule out military and technical cooperation with the North, or even sending weapons -- all of which would violate rafts of UN sanctions against Pyongyang. France 24’s Douglas Herbert takes a look at the fallout from Putin’s comments.

Italy down after Spain humbling, but not out

Spain secured a last 16 berth and won Group B at this year's Euros with a single-goal victory in Gelsenkirchen which would have been a thumping had Gianluigi Donnarumma not been inspired in the Italy goal. Rampant Nico Williams led the charge for Spain who forced Donnarumma into eight saves and suffocated Italy with high-tempo pressing, quickfire passing and rapid attacks down the flanks. Williams toyed with Italy right-back Giovanni Di Lorenzo, flashing across the ball from which Riccardo Calafiori... Читать дальше...

Southgate faces defining moment as England suffer Euro jeers

England arrived in Germany as the bookmakers' favourites to win the tournament, but they have struggled to live up to the hype in a pair of spluttering performances against Serbia and Denmark. Southgate's team were fortunate to escape with a 1-0 win over Serbia after a limp second half display in their Group C opener and they fared even worse in Thursday's lacklustre 1-1 draw with Denmark. Despite taking the lead through Harry Kane's early goal, England quickly lost their momentum and Morten Hjulmand's... Читать дальше...

How Jordan Bardella became France’s far-right poster boy

With a charismatic blend of youthful vigour and strategic communication, far-right leader Jordan Bardella has captivated millions on social media, a sign of the "Bardella mania" that has swept through France’s younger demographic. At just 28, Bardella's ascent to the top of the National Rally party formerly led by Marine Le Pen and Macron's call for snap legislative elections may well pave the road to the prime minister's office.

Spain's amnesty for separatists bogged down in legal wrangles

Judges have two months since the final approval of the bill on May 30 to apply the law, which is expected to affect around 400 people including the former head of the regional government of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont. The aim was for arrest warrants and criminal charges filed against separatists to be annulled, even while appeals against the amnesty law are heard by higher courts -- a process that could take years. But the courts must decide to apply the amnesty on a case-by-case basis, a laborious process that takes time. Читать дальше...

LGBTQ Greeks battle online hate in landmark year for rights

Tens of thousands will flock to the northern city of Thessaloniki for EuroPride between June 21 and 29, after Greece became the first Orthodox Christian country to legalise same-sex marriage and adoption in February. Organisers say Thessaloniki was chosen to host the event as a symbol of LGBTQ unity in the face of significant challenges and expect 30,000 people to participate. But LGBTQ activists say a banner year for their legal rights has come with a harsh backlash online marked by an uptick... Читать дальше...

????Live: Israel-Hezbollah tensions spark fears of regional conflict

Israel and Hezbollah traded fresh cross-border fire late Thursday, as fears of a regional conflict grew after Israel revealed it had approved plans for a Lebanon offensive and the Iran-backed militants vowed to blanket their foe in rockets. In Washington, Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged visiting Israeli officials to avoid escalation in Lebanon and seek a diplomatic resolution. Follow our liveblog for the latest developments in the Israel-Hamas war.

Israel-Hezbollah hostilities fan fears of widening Gaza war

Hezbollah said it fired dozens of rockets into northern Israel Thursday in retaliation for a deadly air strike in south Lebanon that Israel said killed one of the group's operatives. Hezbollah also claimed several other attacks on Israeli troops and positions over the course of the day. The Israeli military said its jets had struck two weapons storage facilities and several other sites belonging to the group, and that it had fired artillery "to remove threats in multiple areas in southern Lebanon". Blues skipper Tuipulotu 'surprised' by fast return for Super Rugby final

A sell-out crowd of around 45,000 is expected at Eden Park to see the Blues lock horns with the Waikato Chiefs in the title decider. Tuipulotu was initially expected to miss the rest of the season and the All Blacks Tests against England next month after hobbling off with a torn medial ligament in a quarter-final win over the Fijian Drua two weeks ago. "I progressed with the rehab after I turned up on Monday morning and surprised myself with how well I went," the 32-year-old told reporters on Friday. Читать дальше...

Veteran Cole determined to play on with England

Cole's front-row team-mate Joe Marler has said this will be his final tour with England before the 33-year-old hangs up his boots next year. But the 37-year-old Cole said Friday that he has no plans to follow suit, adding: "If I can survive training, I'll carry on." "I haven't made any decisions," said Cole, who will break a tie with fly-half Owen Farrell to become England's third most-capped player when he starts against Japan. "I'm loving playing for England and loving this environment and being part of this squad. Читать дальше...

Marsch upset with Argentina's half-time delaying tactics

The game was goalless at the interval and after the half-time break the Canadian players were left standing on the field for several minutes waiting for Argentina to emerge. The world champions scored within four minutes of the re-start and went on to win 2-0 with American Marsch suggesting they were using the time for some extra video analysis. "When they were waiting, I knew that they were looking at video and they were analyzing how they wanted to play against us," he told the post-match press conference. Читать дальше...

Lilly King locks up second Paris berth, gets engaged at US Olympic swimming trials

King, the 100m breaststroke world record-holder who had already won the 100m to punch her ticket to Paris, delivered a battling final lap to finish second behind Kate Douglass in the 200m breaststroke on Thursday. Moments later, her longtime boyfriend James Wells popped the question. "Yes, yes!" a shocked King said after Wells sank to one knee and presented a ring, the couple hugging as cameras rolled. "Oh gosh, I am so excited," King said as they embraced. Later on the medal ceremony podium she... Читать дальше...

Argentina coach Scaloni angry over Atlanta pitch

The world champions beat Canada 2-0 to open their title defence but Scaloni was far from happy with the conditions his players had to deal with. The field at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home to the NFL's Atlanta Falcons and Major League Soccer's Atlanta United, is made of artificial turf but organisers installed grass sod on top for this tournament. "Thank goodness we won, because otherwise it would have been a cheap excuse to sit here and say this but we've known we were going to play here for... Читать дальше...

Beale recalled as Australia look to bounce back from World Cup debacle

Beale has played 95 times for Australia but was suspended from all forms of rugby after being arrested in January 2023 and charged over an alleged incident at a Sydney pub. The 35-year-old was acquitted in February and returned to play Super Rugby for the Western Force in April. Beale was the headline change in a 38-man squad which includes 13 uncapped players. The Wallabies are looking to bounce back in their first games since their Rugby World Cup debacle under Schmidt's predecessor Eddie Jones, when they crashed out in the pool stages. Читать дальше...

Thompson fires 68 to seize lead at Women's PGA Championship

The 29-year-old American, who announced last month this will be her final LPGA season, was one shot ahead of top-ranked compatriot Nelly Korda and Thailand's Patty Tavatanakit after 18 holes at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Washington. "It was overall just a great day," Thompson said. "I played solid golf. Had a good start so I tried to just keep on rolling with that. There are a lot of tough holes out there. I felt very comfortable." Thompson, a runner-up last week, credits her solid play to swing changes not her retirement revelation. Читать дальше...

Cummins hat-trick as Australia hold Bangladesh to 140-8

Cummins grabbed the wickets of Mahmudullah, Mahedi Hasan and Towhid Hridoy in consecutive deliveries over two overs as Australia's bowlers produced a disciplined performance to contain the Bangladeshis at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound. Cummins, restored to the starting line-up, finished with figures of 3-29 off four overs while spinner Adam Zampa also impressed with 2-24. Mitchell Starc meanwhile became the most prolific bowler in the history of white ball cricket with his 95th... Читать дальше...

Murphy, Smith, Douglass bolster Paris programmes with US Olympic swim trials wins

Murphy, 28, fended off a furious late challenge from 19-year-old Keaton Jones, winning in 1min 54.33sec as Jones clocked 1:54.61 to deny Jack Aikens, who was also squeezed out of the top two in the 100m back won by Murphy. Regan Smith and Kate Douglass will also be doubling up in Paris after posting their second wins of the week at Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the NFL's Indianapolis Colts. Murphy, who won double backstroke gold in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 but settled for silver and bronze in Tokyo... Читать дальше...

Argentina begin Copa title defence with 2-0 win over Canada

Julian Alvarez put Argentina ahead in the 49th minute but a combination of inspired goalkeeping from Canada's Max Crepeau and Lionel Messi's surprising lack of precision in front of goal ensured that the underdogs were in the game until Lautaro Martinez settled the contest in the 88th minute. Backed by a huge support decked out in light blue and white striped shirts, Argentina fully deserved their victory but Canada, ranked 48th in the world, can take plenty of credit for the way they fought with the 15-time Copa America winners. Iraqi Kurds mourn loved ones lost on Mediterranean migrant route

Khadija's nephew Rebwar, his sister-in-law Mojdeh and both their families were aboard a sailing boat that sank overnight between Sunday and Monday off the Italian coast. Twelve people were plucked from the water after the boat sank around 120 nautical miles off Calabria, one of whom died after disembarking. More than 60 remain unaccounted for after six bodies were retrieved on Wednesday from the sea by the Italian coastguard. "What's clear is that Mojdeh survived. We spoke to her on the phone," the 54-year-old housewife told AFP. Читать дальше...
