Next Up: Exeter City vs Wycombe Wanderers

ExeWeb

Dan Green has been announced as being in charge for the Wycombe visit on Tuesday night, assisted by Kevin Nicholson. Saturday was Caldwell’s last game in charge, and he oversaw a second successive 0-0 draw, meaning it’s now three matches since City last scored through Luca Woodhouse’s piledriver at Reading. City’s injury list remains huge, although the lesser-spotted Ryan Rydel made a welcome return off the bench. Reece Cole was another name missing from the squad as Caldwell confirmed the attacking midfielder had felt his achilles, although it’s not thought to be serious but is likely to keep him out on Tuesday night at least.

Wycombe go into Tuesday night’s visit to Devon on the back of a 3-2 reverse in a local match at Reading. That was the Chairboys’ second defeat of 2026 so far as Michael Duff’s side looks to put itself into the playoff picture. Duff has been well backed in the January window with five new signings – two permanent and three loan – including the familiar face of Luke Harris, who was an instant fan favourite during his loan at City in 2024. Aaron Morley from Bolton comes with plenty of pedigree too, as do loanees Nathan Lowe and Cauley Woodrow. With Richard Kone having left for QPR in the summer, Sam Bell and Fred Oyedinma have been relied upon for goals with six and eight respectively in the league.

City have had the upper hand in two matches so far this season in the league and FA Cup. A late Jack Grimmer own goal gave City a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture at Adams Park after City had been under the cosh for most of the game. The FA Cup match at SJP was an altogether more one-sided affair as City booked their trip to Manchester City with a thumping 4-0 win through a brace from Aitchison, Higgins and Wareham. That league win at Adams Park saw City take the head to head lead in league matches with nine wins to Wycombe’s eight, with a further eight matches finishing level.

The match officials for this game will be:-

Referee: Gavin Ward
Assistant Referees: Mark Russell and Matthew Smith
Fourth Official: Carl Brook

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Gavin Ward take charge of an Exeter game. December 2017 in a second round FA Cup tie at Forest Green. The game finished 3-3. He’s taken charge of 21 games so far this season, booking 70 players and sending off 3 players.
