Microsoft Debuts Copilot Cowork, Bringing Claude Tech Into Office Workflows

eWeek

Microsoft wants Copilot to do more than generate answers. The tech giant has unveiled agentic Copilot Cowork, a new Microsoft 365 capability that uses Claude technology to execute workplace tasks and automate multi-step office workflows.

Designed to turn simple requests into coordinated action across tools like Outlook, Teams, and Excel, the system lets users hand off work while Copilot builds the plan and carries it through in the background.

Turning intent into action

When a task is handed off, Copilot Cowork turns the request into a structured plan before any action is taken. It pulls context from across Microsoft 365, including emails, meetings, messages, and files, to understand the objective and map out the steps needed to complete it.

The capability integrates the technology behind Anthropic’s Claude Cowork into Microsoft 365 Copilot as part of its broader multi-model approach, allowing the platform to tap different AI systems depending on the task.

Once the plan is set, tasks can run in the background with checkpoints along the way. Copilot Cowork checks in when clarification is needed, and surfaces recommended actions for approval before applying changes, keeping users in control while the workflow progresses.

What Copilot Cowork can take off your plate

Microsoft outlined several scenarios showing how Copilot Cowork could step in to handle routine knowledge work end-to-end. In each case, the system takes a simple request and turns it into coordinated actions across Microsoft 365 apps.

Clean up your calendar

Copilot Cowork can review a packed Outlook schedule and identify conflicts, low-priority meetings, or gaps that could be used for focused work. After asking what should be prioritized, it proposes adjustments and, once approved, can reschedule meetings, decline invitations, add focus blocks, and even prepare materials in advance.

Prepare meetings from start to finish

Instead of manually assembling documents, Copilot Cowork can gather relevant emails, files, and prior conversations related to an upcoming meeting. From there, it generates a briefing document, supporting analysis, and a presentation deck, and also schedules preparation time and drafts follow-up updates for the team.

Compile company research

For deeper research tasks, Copilot Cowork can pull information from web and work sources, including financial filings, earnings reports, analyst commentary, and relevant news coverage. It then organizes the findings into an executive summary, a structured research memo with sources, and supporting spreadsheets that teams can use immediately.

Build launch plans and competitive analysis

When teams are preparing for a new product release, Copilot Cowork can assemble competitive comparisons, distill positioning into a value proposition document, and generate customer-ready pitch materials. It can also outline milestones, owners, and next steps, turning a high-level request into a coordinated launch workflow.

From calendars to research memos, each example shows how a single request can set work in motion across Microsoft’s apps.

Built with enterprise guardrails

Enterprise deployment includes the same protections that organizations already rely on across Microsoft 365. Identity systems, permissions, and compliance policies apply automatically, ensuring the system operates within existing governance rules.

Every action remains visible and traceable. Changes to schedules, documents, or workflows can be reviewed, with recommendations surfaced for approval before they are carried out, giving teams a clear audit trail of what was proposed and what was executed.

Tasks also run inside a protected cloud environment designed to isolate activity while work progresses in the background. That structure allows workflows to continue safely across devices while keeping sensitive company data within Microsoft 365.

First stop, research preview

Copilot Cowork is beginning its rollout with a limited test group. The feature is currently available to a small set of customers through a research preview, giving the company early feedback on how the system performs in real workplace scenarios.

Broader access is expected to follow soon after. Microsoft plans to make Copilot Cowork available through its Frontier program, an initiative that gives organizations early access to emerging Microsoft 365 features.

Microsoft says broader expansion is planned for later in March 2026 as Copilot Cowork moves toward wider enterprise availability.

Researchers say many Chrome extensions marketed as AI helpers may be siphoning off users’ chatbot conversations.
