The Angels break the game open with six runs on two-out hits in the fifth inning and roll to a 9-4 win. They outscored the Yankees 17-6 in the final two games of the series.

NEW YORK — The Angels’ roster full of young players didn’t seem to be bothered by playing at Yankee Stadium.
“I don’t think they knew where they were,” Manager Ron Washington quipped. “They just went out and played, the way they’ve been doing all year. Just play. I wish the weather would have been nicer so they could really find out what Yankee Stadium was like.”
The Angels dampened the enthusiasm of the Yankees fans even more than the steady rain, winning 9-4 in the series finale on Thursday night to take their first series at Yankee Stadium since 2017.
“It’s huge,” said outfielder Jo Adell, whose three-run double was the key blow in a six-run inning that put away Thursday’s game. “It shows that at any point in time we’re competitive with anybody.”
The Angels (51-64) outscored the Yankees, 17-6, in the final two games of the series, after losing the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday.
Yankees sluggers Aaron Judge and Juan Soto were mostly kept in check, including going hitless in six at-bats against Angels starter Tyler Anderson in his six innings on Thursday.
Anderson had a lead before he threw his first pitch of the game, thanks to Nolan Schanuel’s 12th homer of the season, which led off the game. Schanuel, who had three hits, drove in a run to put the Angels ahead 2-1 in the third.
Then the Angels rained runs on the Yankees as the clouds were showering the Bronx.
There were two outs and a runner at first when Zach Neto came to the plate against Yankees lefty Nestor Cortes. Neto yanked a double – one of his three hits – down the left field line, sending Michael Stefanic to third. Logan O’Hoppe then drew a walk to load the bases.
Kevin Pillar, whose specialty has been hitting lefties, fell behind 0-and-2 and then threw his bat at a pitch well off the plate, dumping it into right field for a two-run single.
The Yankees then brought in right-hander Enyel De Los Santos, and he walked Anthony Rendon to load the bases again.
Adell followed by hitting a soft liner that dropped in front of Soto in right field, clearing the bases.
“Start getting too far out over the plate with that guy, that’s where he gets a lot of his chase,” Adell said of De Los Santos. “Just trying to say to the middle of the field. Went opposite field a couple of times today. For me, that’s always a telltale sign that I’m over the ball and I’m staying through the ball well.”
Brandon Drury then drew another walk, and Mickey Moniak followed with a single into right, pushing the lead to 8-1.
“That’s what you have to do, do some thing to make them work and put some pressure on them,” Washington said. “And we got some big hits.”
On the mound, Anderson gave up only a second-inning homer to Jazz Chisholm Jr., while staying out of trouble against Judge and Soto.
He struck out Aaron Judge twice, getting him swinging through a changeup in the first inning and getting him to look at a fastball on the outside corner in the fourth. Anderson got Judge to break his bat on a groundout in the sixth.
“Obviously, he’s a great hitter,” Anderson said. “You don’t really want to make a lot of lot of mistakes to him. Just try to try to execute pitches. And that worked out tonight.”
The Angels also made a couple of nice defensive plays. Rendon charged a bouncer at third and made a strong throw to get DJ LeMahieu in the second inning. Moniak made a leaping catch at the fence to rob Soto of an extra-base hit in the sixth. Adell made a nice catch of a sinking liner that Judge hit in the eighth.
“It was just a good team win,” Anderson said. “Good at-bats. Good offense. Great defense. It’s good to leave here with a series win.”
