Paphos district court ruled on Monday that the 26-year-old accomplice of convicted murderer Doros Theofanous, who escaped while on a visit to his family in Choletria, remain in custody until the trial begins before the criminal court on October 22.
On Friday, when it had been decided that the case would be sent to the criminal court, the defendant’s lawyer had requested that his client be released until the trial.
The 26-year-old is facing charges of assisting the escape of a person in legal custody and disobedience to lawful orders, inter alia.
The district court deemed the 26-year-old, who was on parole, should remain in custody as he may not show up next time.
His lawyer, Elias Satolias, objected to the decision, saying that his client was innocent until proven guilty.
He also said his client went to Choletria to pick up a relative of the escaped convict and not Theofanous himself.
