Ravichandran Ashwin joined an elite group of cricketers as he plays his 100th Test match.
The off-spinner, made his Test debut in 2011 and completed an outstanding record of 500 wickets in Rajkot, becoming only the second Indian to achieve the feat.
“The desire to excel hasn’t changed, wanting to keep on evolving as a cricketer, that’s something that’s been organic to me right from my club cricket days in Chennai,” Ashwin mentioned after achieving the historic feat.
In the Ranchi Test match, Ashwin scored his 35th five-wicket haul in Test cricket, tying Anil Kumble’s record for the most five-fors by an Indian in Test cricket.
Ashwin is the second bowler, after Muttiah Muralidaran, to take 500 wickets in fewer than 100 Tests. Ashwin’s Test debut was in November 2011, Nathan Lyon has taken more wickets than him, making him one of the most productive modern-day Test bowlers.
Ashwin’s recent milestone places him among the elite Indian cricketers who have played more than 100 Test matches. Cheteshwar Pujara was the latest Indian player to accomplish the milestone.
Sachin Tendulkar holds the international record for the most Test matches played, at 200.
