At the third T20 International at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium, Rohit Sharma was the deciding factor between Afghanistan and India. India’s 212 point total from 22/4 was made possible by Rohit (121). The Indian skipper demonstrated to the world that he belongs in this format, but Rinku Singh did contribute as well with an incredible 69 off 39 balls. As the first cricket player to score a century in T20I, it was his sixth. He still had work to do.
On Wednesday, a double Super Over was required to determine the winner, therefore he was forced to bat twice. As a result, in an international match, Rohit became the first Indian to bat three times. He also contributed to each of the Super Overs. Rohit’s bat was responsible for all of India’s boundaries in the two Super Overs combined—three sixes and one four. India needed two runs off the last ball, but the captain of the team chose to put Rinku in, who could plainly run faster than a worn-out Rohit, rather than bat again. Was he permitted to do it, though? Indeed, nothing in the rules prevents the batter from taking such action.Undoubtedly, the Afghanistan players were shocked. Captain Ibrahim Zadran and umpires Jayaraman Madanagopal and Virender Sharma were observed engaging in a protracted conversation.
The laws regarding a retiring batter are as follows:
“When the ball is dead, a hitter may end his innings at any moment. The umpires must be notified of a batter’s retirement before allowing play to resume.””A hitter is entitled to continue his innings if he retires due to illness, injury, or any other unforeseen circumstance. The batter will be shown as “Retired – not out” if, for whatever reason, this does not occur.”A batter’s innings may only be continued with the opposing captain’s permission if they retire for any reason other than those listed in clause 25.4.2. Should his innings not be continued for whatever reason, the hitter will be marked as “Retired – out.”
Was Rohit wounded when he retired or was he retired? All of the chaos is there. Nothing indicated that Rohit was hurt or unwell. Had he been, he would not have batted in the upcoming Super Over. Then he was clearly retired, am I correct? Technically, yes. Although there hasn’t been an official confirmation, it appears like India had no choice but to “retire Rohit out” in order to put in a new batter.
The Super Over playing conditions are relevant at this point. Rohit shouldn’t have been permitted to bat in the next six-ball set if he had been “retired out.” It is explicitly stated in the Super Over playing regulations that “Any batter dismissed in any previous Super Over shall be ineligible to bat in any subsequent Super Over.” Because bowlers are subject to the same law, neither Azmatullah Omarzai nor Mukesh Kumar bowled in the next Super Over.

So why did Rohit bat again? Did umpires Madanagopal and Sharma make a grave mistake? It is not possible to say for sure. It is yet unknown if Rohit retired with a disability or without one. Unless they had communicated with the Afghanistan team and permitted it, it appears that the umpires erred in their decision. There was nothing to indicate that Rohit was hurt. According to the regulations, a batter who retires healthy will stay “retired not out” and can reenter the batter’s position later, but only if the fielding permits it.
