Newcastle United were keen on signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace during the summer transfer window.
The Magpies were keen on signing the 24-year-old England international, but they failed with multiple offers for the player. He has established himself as one of the best central defenders in the league and he would have been a quality acquisition for Newcastle. There is no doubt that he would have improved them at the back.
Newcastle will be hoping to secure Champions League qualification this season and they will look to do well in the domestic competitions as well. Although they have brought in Lloyd Kelly earlier this summer, they needed another quality central defender.
The failure to sign the England international will certainly be very disappointing for Newcastle. However, former Premier League star Paul Merson believes that the defender will be disappointed to miss out on the move as well.
Merson feels that Crystal Palace were right to keep him at the club and it could be a difference between them securing safety and going down this season. However, he is worried that the situation will affect the player negatively.
Merson said on Sky Sports: “Fair play to Crystal Palace, they’ve dug their heels in as a small club, no disrespect to them.
“I’m a big fan of [Marc] Guehi, he keeps you in the Premier League. Staying in the Premier League is worth another £100m or 150m. But how does the lad react now? It’s a big couple of months for him as this will knock him sideways.”
It will be interesting to see if the defender can perform at his best in the coming months. He will have wanted to join a big club this summer and Newcastle have an ambitious project. They could be challenging for trophies in the coming seasons and the player will certainly hope to make a step up in his career now.
