Premier League legend Alan Shearer believes Arsenal could do with signing a new striker this summer, naming Ivan Toney as a possible option for around £40million.
Still, Shearer seems to think Mikel Arteta has hinted that the Gunners won’t necessarily be strengthening up front as a priority, even if there does seem to be a bit of a gap in that position.
Kai Havertz ended last season in superb form and also picked up a goal and an assist in the Premier League’s opening weekend, helping Arsenal to a 2-0 win over Wolves at the Emirates Stadium.
It could be that Arteta has full faith in the Germany international over the course of the season ahead, while Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard can also play up front, though Eddie Nketiah has fallen down the pecking order in recent times and a departure seems likely for him as he’s been linked with Everton by Football Insider.
Toney is surely an option worth considering for Arsenal, especially if he is available on the cheap due to being in the final year of his Brentford contract.
Shearer isn’t convinced Arsenal will move for Toney, but he seems to think they could do with reinforcements in that department.
“If it was up to me, I would look to bring one in. Listening to Mikel it doesn’t sound like they’re going to bring one in,” Shearer said on The Rest Is Football podcast.
“He’s looking for a striker to improve on the numbers of Havertz, Trossard, Saka and what the team did last year. Can they do find that player? I don’t see why not.
“I think from Brentford’s point of view they probably have to sell Ivan Toney. They can’t afford to wait another six months and let him leave for free.
“I would be amazed if he went for £15m, I would imagine it would be more like £40m.”
Gary Lineker also seemed to agree that Toney could be a good signing for Arsenal, so it will be interesting to keep an eye on this one and see if the Gunners can be tempted by the 28-year-old, who was left out of Thomas Frank’s squad for yesterday’s win over Crystal Palace.
