Border 2 is one of the most eagerly awaited sequels, building on the legacy of the iconic 1997 film Border. Directed by J.P. Dutta, the original movie featured a stellar cast including Sunny Deol, Sunil Shetty, Jackie Shroff, Akshaye Khanna, and others. Fans have been excited ever since the announcement that a sequel is in the works, with Sunny reprising his iconic role. For months, speculation swirled about which other actors would join the cast. Initially, there were reports that Ayushmann Khurrana might be involved, but later news suggested that he had stepped away from the project. After that, Varun Dhawan's name emerged as a possible addition to the cast.
Today, the Badrinath Ki Dulhania actor confirmed that he is indeed a part of Border 2, adding to the excitement surrounding the sequel. Varun Dhawan recently took to Instagram to share an exciting teaser, officially confirming his involvement in the sequel, alongside Sunny Deol. In his caption, Varun reminisced about his childhood, revealing that he first watched the first movie in theatres at Chandan Cinema when he was just a fourth grader. He described how the film left a lasting impression on him, instilling a deep sense of national pride that he still feels today.
The actor expressed his admiration for the armed forces, praising their dedication to protecting the country and their efforts during natural calamities. He expressed his honour at playing a brave soldier in what is considered India's biggest war film. The actor concluded his heartfelt post by asking his fans for their best wishes and ending with a patriotic "Jai Hind."
J.P. Dutta, who directed the original Border, will not be helming the sequel. Instead, the story for Border 2 has been penned by his daughter, Nidhi Dutta. Anurag Singh, a filmmaker renowned for his work on films such as Punjab 1984, Jatt and Juliet, and the widely acclaimed Kesari, will direct the sequel. With Anurag Singh at the helm, the sequel is expected to bring a fresh perspective while staying true to the essence of the original.
There were earlier reports suggesting that actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh might be a part of the Border 2 cast, but no official confirmations have been made regarding his involvement. The film is set to release in theatres on Republic Day 2026 .
