WhistlePig makes imaginative whiskeys, often via inspired collaborations. Previous partners have included Alfa Romeo’s F1 Team, baseball legend Big Papi, and sotol brand Los Magos. Now, the Vermont whiskey makers are continuing the tradition by working with Solo Stove—the company behind smokeless stainless steel fire pits—on a new summer wheat whiskey called CampStock.
"We've experimented with wheat whiskey as part of our FarmStock series and other limited editions," says WhistlePig blender Meghan Ireland. "[But] CampStock takes the soft and smooth wheat profile to a new level."
As you can already tell, WhistlePig CampStock isn’t another one of the brand's famed rye whiskeys. Rather, it's a blend of 85 percent wheat and 15 percent rye finished in barrels that were toasted and charred using a Solo Stove to achieve a precise char and toast profile. Ireland explains that WhistlePig's cooperage, Independent Stave Company, was more than up for the challenge of toasting with a Solo Stove, which made for an altogether unique whiskey.
Unlike many of WhistlePig’s spicier offerings, this new release is soft and light. On the nose, the whiskey delivers aromas of sweet maple with hints of citrus. The palate finds more citrus alongside orange peel and notes of freshly toasted bread crust. The creamy finish features bursts of vanilla.
Bottled at a somewhat mellow 86 proof, WhistlePig CampStock Whiskey will are available online at the WhistlePig website and at liquor stores nationwide for $75.
But the collaboration doesn't stop at whiskey. After making the bottles, WhistlePig broke down the used casks for firewood, which was sold as part of Solo Stove's limited edition CampStock Kit. Although now sold out, three other limited-edition bundles are available for anyone looking to combine their love of whiskey and bonfires—and all of them include custom whiskey glasses and ice cube molds in addition to a Solo Stove fire pit.
