Two in dock for false RAF claims
A man and a woman appeared in a Cape Town court in two separate cases, accused of defrauding the Road accident Fund of over R1.3 million in total.
|||Cape Town – A man and a woman appeared in court on Tuesday, in different cases, accused of fraud against the Road Accident Fund (RAF).
Both appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Bellville, Cape Town, before magistrate Sabrina Sonnenberg.
The man, Mninindawo Mdledle, 57, of Khayelitsha, is alleged to have submitted a R525 000 claim, via his attorney.
Prosecutor Simone Liedeman alleges that he falsely claimed that he was knocked over as a pedestrian crossing the road, in the dark of night, whilst alone.
He claimed that he fell to the ground, and injured his left ankle. No ambulance was called, as he was taken to hospital in a private car, he claimed.
According to the charge sheet, he was transferred by ambulance from the Khyalitsha District Hospital to Tygerberg Hospital, for surgery to his ankle, but failed to mention to the ambulance driver that he had been knocked over by a car.
The State alleges that he in fact injured his ankle in a mishap at home.
The second case involved a woman, Faith Mgcina, 33, of Guguletu.
Prosecutor Denzyl Combrink alleges that she submitted a fraudulent claim for R832 000, claiming to have been the victim in a hit-and-run incident.
An investigation revealed that she had an ectopic pregnancy, which caused her to bleed for three days, and that she fabricated her story about the hit-and-run incident in her claim for general damages, it is alleged.
The RAF in fact paid her claim.
Both were warned to appear in court again on August 25.
