Cohen spent much of his last weeks of freedom continuing to help investigators, with the hope that he might lessen his prison sentence. But in the end, lawmakers didn’t want to get involved. “He seemed relaxed, in a way,” said one friend who stopped by Cohen’s apartment before his trip upstate to Otisville. “The day he gets there is the most peaceful day he will have in years.”
