Deepika Padukone inspired and encouraged many people a decade ago when she spoke about depression. The actress shared what was going on in her mind at that time and even stated how therapy helped her a lot. It is not often we see celebrities speaking up about their mental health. In society, these discussions are still considered taboo. Recently, a video has been going viral in which a comedian is mocking DP for speaking up about her depression. A lot of netizens slammed the comedian for her insensitive jokes.
Amidst all the mockery, Somy Ali has shown her support to Deepika Padukone. In an interview, the actress lauded the Piku star for speaking up about her mental health struggles. Somy told IANS that she has been advocating for years that anyone who has the platform should discuss mental health issues openly. Somy stated that when DP spoke about her struggles publicly, it was a groundbreaking moment, not just for the industry but for the world. The actress also addressed how Deepika was mocked online and was labelled as seeking public attention.
"Here is an actor of her stature publicly sharing that she was perpetually depressed and had suicidal thoughts, and yet, instead of empathy, she faced ridicule. I can't say I was shocked. I experience the same response when I share anything truthful without sugarcoating it," said Somy Ali.
Further in this entertainment news, Somy said that despite the backlash, the Chennai Express actress should be celebrated and placed on a pedestal, given awards, and shown utmost respect. Somy lauded her for not only speaking out but for also starting a mental health foundation. The actress also highlighted how if the discussions were this open back then, Parveen Babi would still be alive and had taken her medication for paranoid schizophrenia.
