Belgrade (dpa) - Macedonia has started building a fence on another segment of its border with Greece in order to control the influx of migrants, an army officer told Telma TV Thursday. The new section is being built at Medzitlija. The Macedonian army erected a 3-kilometre fence along the main border crossing at Gevgelija/Idomeni, near the Skopje-Athens highway, in November.Macedonia hopes the fences will channel thousands of migrants arriving each day towards controlled entry points.Following the example of other countries on the Balkan migration route - Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia - Macedonia stopped allowing economic migrants through on November 20.Since then, only refugees fleeing violence in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan are being allowed to continue their journey towards western Europe, mostly Germany, where they hope to gain asylum.Greek authorities on Wednesday moved around 2,000 migrants from Iran, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Morocco and other countries to Athens after they were stranded at Idomeni.
