In 2015, a lot of amazing movies were dropped by Nollywood movie producers. These movies showed great improvement in the quality of movies coming from Nigerian movie producers. They were applauded both at home and abroad. Naij.com presents a list of the top Nollywood movies that rocked the cinema in 2015.
1. The First Lady
The First Lady is a dramedy and the story of a street girl and her pimp told with intrigue, twists and turns of street elements that attest to the versatility of Omoni as an actress. In a classic Cinderella like story, a prostitute, Michelle, is stuck in a world she couldn’t escape from. Her hope that one day a Prince Charming would rescue her from it all, seems lost. An heir to an empire, Kenechi, is transformed into a child by an overly ambitious uncle who wants the empire to himself. Bound by a shared destiny, Michelle finds that she might be doing the rescuing until she realises there’s no escaping her pimp (Obama), who would do anything to keep her as his First Lady. The story was written, directed and produced by Omoni Oboli and premiered both in Nigeria and abroad.
2. Road to Yesterday
Road To Yesterday tells the story of an estranged couple, who tries to mend their relationship on a road trip to a relative’s funeral. Rather than make amend, when memories and secrets from the past are revealed, they discovered that a lot more is at stake than their relationship. The movie Road to Yesterday was produced by The Entertainment Network (T.E.N) and directed by Ishaya Bako stars the Award-winning actress, Genevieve Nnaji and introduces Nigerian-British actor, Oris Erhuerho. The movie has been premiered in Nigerian and abroad.
Other cast includes Majid Michel, Chioma ‘Chigul’ Omeruah and veteran Ebele Okaro lead the supporting cast.
3. Dark
It is the story of an estranged woman (Tracy) whose child (Precious) dies in surgery following a careless domestic accident which damaged her brain cells in the hands of a workaholic Doctor, Dr. Delphine. Tracy becomes obsessed with the doctor as she believed she was responsible for her daughter’s death and will stop at nothing to get vengeance.
The movie stars Monalisa Chinda, Rukky Sanda, Van Vicker, Ik Ogbonna, Bolanle Ninolowo and others
4. A Soldier’s Story
A Soldier’s Story’ is a love story of a military man, which also highlighted military call of duty, life & death and the risk everything, with their passion to protect their nation.The movie celebrates the Nigerian heroic soldiers to encourage and appreciates their contribution to the country. It featured AMVCA award-winning actress Linda Ejiofor and a renowned voice-over broadcaster; Tope Tedela Nollywood actors and actresses featured in the epic movie. It also featured young and brilliant actors like of Daniel K Daniel, Adesua Etomi, Zinab Olumide, Owuru Balogun, Sambasa Nzeribe, and Chico Aligwekwe among others.
It was produced by Martin Gbados in conjunction with Frankie Ogar.
5. Fifty
Fifty is one of 238 fiction and documentary features, including 16 World Premieres, 8 International Premieres and 40 European Premieres. The production is Mo Abudu’s quest to showcase African women coming of age, loaded with increasingly similar aspirations and dilemmas faced by their contemporaries everywhere, while yet navigating unresolved traditions and obligations.
A film by Biyi Bandele, starring top Nollywood actresses such as Dakore Akande, Iretiola Doyle, Omoni Oboli and Nse Ikpe Etim-Sule. Special appearances include Femi Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Waje, Tiwa Savage and Nneka. Fifty was written by Bola Agbaje, Femi Adesoye and Biyi Bandele, Executive Producer Mo Abudu, Produced by Tope Oshin-Ogun and Directed by Biyi Bandele.
6. Forever Within Us
Produced by Kehinde Olorunyomi Odukoya features Bayray McNwizu, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Mary Lazarus, Daniel Lloyd, Seun Akindele and a host of others, the movie Forever Within Us tells a story of how six friends visit to a long-time friend becomes a nightmare when the host’s husband kills one of them in an unforeseen rage. Afraid of how the law might swing, all seven witnesses decide to preserve the body while they await new ideas.
7. If Tomorrow Never Comes
The movie was inspired by and is loosely based on the true life story of Kweku, a little boy who suffered from cerebral palsy. It also tells the story of how a poor pregnant village girl who finds herself trapped in a deadly situation at a supposed safe haven manages to escape to the city to find the father of her unborn child, however the life of bliss she imagines, is far from what she meets there. The movie was produced by Yvonne Nelson and directed by Pascal Amanfo.
The movie features actors and actresses such as Yvonne Nelson, David Dontoh, Rebecca Acheampong, Deyemi Okanlawan and many more.
8. Dry
Produced and directed Stephanie Linus, the movie Dry focuses on the Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF), condition and under aged marriage among women. It narrates the story of a thirteen year old girl (Halima) whose poor uneducated parents married her off to a 60-year old man who constantly rapes her. The little girl gets pregnant and suffers VVF after delivery and was abandoned by her husband. Fortune shines on Halima as she meets with a medical doctor (Zara), who also suffered a horrific childhood, she tries to get her through her situation and also saved other young women under such circumstances. It features actors such as Liz Benson, Stephanie Linus, Darwin Shaw, Paul Sambo, Olu Jacobs and William McNamara.
9. While You Slept
Directed by Desmond Elliot, While You Slept is an emotional film which talks about love and deceit. It revolves around a young girl who got married to a rich young man without knowing that the man is married to someone else with a kid. The man who did not want to hurt her feelings had to reveal his true marital status and she got married to another man in the quest of having a child. The movie features Nollywood stars such as Ini Edo, Bryan Okwara, Jide Kosoko, Biola Williams, Joseph Benjamin, Benita Akpofure among others.
10. The Antique
Written and produced by Darasen Richards, The Antique is a fictional story, inspired by events of the Southern Nigeria people in the 19th Century. The movie stars Olu Jacobs, Bimbo Akintola, Ricardo Agbor, Funso Adeolu as well as Lekki Wives actress Kiki Omeili, Gabriel Afolayan, comedian Akpororo, Omowunmi Dada and introducing Oge Indiana among others.
The Antique is a fictional story, inspired by events of the Southern Nigeria people in the 19th Century. With a technique that combines theatrical aesthetics and culturally derived meanings, cultivated for utilitarian purposes, this film highlights on the characters that fought to defend its rich culture and help build it’s kingdom. Godo Kingdom is in pandemonium as the only heir to the throne lies at death’s door. Therefore, an innocent girl must journey to a land where mortals are forbidden, in search of an antique. But will she return?
11. Iyore
Iyore tells the story of a life after life, a mythical tale set around the ancient city of Benin kingdom. When School Teacher Osarugwe (Rita Dominic) begins to teach her class about the historical tales of the Benin Empire, she opens up the door to a love story surrounding one of the three sacred virgins of the great Benin. As the story evolves, Prince Azuwa (Joseph Benjamin) resurfaces to profess his undying love for Osarugwe, his childhood sweetheart. Now a married woman, Osarugwe is caught up in an inner battle of what is right and wrong.

12. Victims
Victims is about a young lady who had to go through a lot of things in life; most importantly, things she didn’t call for but she was born into. A lot of people go through a lot of experiences not because they brought it upon themselves but maybe it’s a curse or destiny. The movie stars top Nollywood actors Olu Jacobs, Seun Akindele, Saheed Balogun, Fathia Balogun, Mercy herself and Ghanaian actress Juliet Ibrahim. It was directed by Lancelot Oduah Imasuen.
A talented, beautiful young sickle-cell sufferer overcomes social stigma, prejudice and her own low self-esteem, to achieve career success, marriage and motherhood. Nigerian movie produced by Tunde Kelani and the movie is an adaptation of Yinka Egbokhare’s novel of the same title, written by Ade Solanke. Dazzling Mirage was first screened at the Nollywood Film Festival in New Zealand, premiered on November 7, 2014, at the Muson Centre, Lagos and was generally released theatrically on February 2015. The movie was also nominated in the Best Costume Design category at the 2015 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA).
It features stars like Kemi ‘Lala’ Akindoju, Seun Akindele, Kunle Afolayan, Taiwo Ajai-Lycett, Carol king among others.
