It can be an exciting time when you get offered a job, especially when you have spent months or years waiting for the opportunity.
This excitement could lead you into signing a contract that you will only come to regret weeks into the new job. To prevent making such mistakes, keep these things in mind.
The distance: You need to make sure the distance between your job and your home is one you can handle. Your job would be a hundred times more stressful if you find that you are spending up to 4, 5 hours and above on the road. This might lead you not to do your job as well, or even make you extremely stressed, causing you to be unhealthy.
The money: A lot of people settle for way less than they are worth in the job market. If you can honesty see that your salary could not possibly take care of your needs, it might be better to continue negotiating, or let the opportunity go. There is not point taking a job only to quit later when the energy you put into it is not worth what you get out of it.
The growth opportunity: If you do settle for a salary which is a little less than ideal, make sure the job gives you an opportunity for growth. You should at least be able take comfort in the fact that if you work hard and impress your bosses, you will grow to a position/salary that is you are more comfortable with.
The hours: Do not let the eagerness of getting a job cause you to take one where the hours are way to grueling. Yes, work is important, but you should always make sure you have time for other things in your life.
The expectations: You know that part of the Job Requirement where the employer states that they expect you to do certain things but remind you that this is not a rigid set of requirement. They are basically saying they can make changes to what is expected of you and even ask for more. Take advantage of the job interview to ask for a clearer picture on the kind of things that might be expected of you. Some people take up one job position, only to start working and they are given a job meant for two people, sadly, this does not mean an increase in pay.
The environment: You spend over 50 percent of your time at your job, so is important that the environment works with your personality. You want a place where you will be comfortable and feel a part of the team.
