In a bid to increase access to free and quality fistula treatment, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on Thursday, December 10, donated 40 fistula surgical kits to eight states in Nigeria.
The states include both national and state fistula centres located in Katsina, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Kebbi, Plateau and Oyo.

Speaking at the event which took place in Abuja, wife of the president, Aisha Buhari lauded the initiative adding that it will improve the quality of lives of women and children in Nigeria.
She said: “We recognize the fact that the task ahead is enormous but they are not insurmountable. We believe that the resolve we have made to let our mothers live while giving lives, and our children to live beyond their fifth birthdays and very importantly, the support we continue to get from you all and the rest of the international community, we shall realize out vision for the women and children of Nigeria.”

In his remarks, the Country Representative (UNFPA) in Nigeria, Ratidzai Ndhlovu, said over six thousand women and girls have been treated while over seven hundred women and girls have been rehabilitated since the partnership which began in 2005.
She said: “Since 2005, UNFPA have supported the establishment of fistula treatment centres in Kano, Ebonyi, Zari, Sokoto, Kebbi and Cross River state with over a hundred and forty six trained health worked in fistula surgery. we also supplied these centres with treatment kits and consumables.”
“Overall, UNFPA has supported the provision of free fistula repair surgery to 6,214 women and girls; and the economic rehabilitation of 775 women and girls,” she added.
It is estimated that one in ten women will suffer from this health condition after childbirth with over eight hundred thousand so far affected. This objective would help prevent, treat, rehabilitate and regenerate those affected to their respective communities.
