#Bayelsa Decides: Ijaw Women Protest Against Rescheduled Gubernatorial Poll
Following the nullification of Saturday’s Bayelsa state governorship election in Southern Ijaw local government area, women from the local government in the state on Monday, December 7 staged a peaceful protest in Yenagoa against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting the rescheduled state governorship election.
According to Daily Independent, the aggrieved women, who were led by Faith Opene, the state PDP women leader, were drawn from the eight local government areas of the state.
The women dressed in black attires and armed with placards with the inscription “Leadership is about building and not destroying, “INEC are you still independent?!”, Buhari are you still for everybody and nobody” and “No vote in Southern Ijaw wards”.
The women converged on the Peace Park opposite Government House and later marched through the Onopa-Ovom axis of the Mbiama-Yenagoa Road.

According to the women, INEC colluded with the All Progressive Congress (APC) to disenfranchise the people of the state, adding that it was wicked and unconstitutional.
She said though the decision to reschedule the election was normal, INEC’s refusal to put necessary machinery to protect lives and materials for the election invalidate any outcome from the charade termed election in Southern Ijaw, Vanguard reports.
The Southern Ijaw local government area has the highest number of voters in Bayelsa state, and as results from the poll trickled in, there were strong indications that victory in the region will ultimately decide who emerges as the next Bayelsa state governor.

However, INEC nullified the election due to violence during the election in the area, the abduction of electoral officials and ballot box snatching. The election will be conducted in due date at the affected local government area which is one of the state’s eight LGAs.
