Dr. Marty Makary, Professor at Johns Hopkins, member of the National Academy of Medicine, and author of the upcoming book Blind Spots: When Medicine Gets It Wrong, and What It Means for Our Health, joined the show to discuss his recent New York Post piece on the dangers of smartphones and social media for students in school. Makary and Benson delved into the addictive nature of social media and its detrimental impacts on student mental health and why social media in “moderation” might not be a wise path for parents to take. Dr. Makary had this to say on the recently published letter by Mark Zuckerberg:
“I wish he’d send me a letter… well, what’s amazing about that pressure that the white House put on Facebook and Meta, as we’re now learning about in more detail, is that they didn’t just politely suggest that we, you know, take a second look at certain individuals and posts, as the white House will suggest today. They were dropping F-bombs, White House staff, individuals threatening revoking section 230. They were very heavy handed and they put a lot of pressure.”
