TVS Motor Company is strategically moving towards eco-friendly transportation with a CNG-powered version of its popular Jupiter scooter. This news follows closely behind the launch of Bajaj’s Freedom 125, the world’s first CNG motorcycle.
According to a recent Autocar India report, TVS is developing the Jupiter 125 CNG under the codename U740. This project positions TVS to become the first manufacturer worldwide to offer a factory-fitted CNG kit on a scooter. The report suggests a potential launch date in late 2024 or the first half of 2025.
While details are scarce, the Jupiter 125 CNG indicates TVS’s commitment to providing diverse options for fuel-efficient transportation. This aligns with their existing presence in the electric scooter segment and their plans for future product diversification.
In a statement to Autocar India, TVS acknowledged the potential of various fuel technologies, including CNG, EVs, and multi-fuels. However, their current focus is launching an additional electric vehicle, an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle, and an electric three-wheeler (E3W) this year.
Similar to the Bajaj Freedom 125, the Jupiter 125 CNG is expected to have separate tanks for CNG and petrol. A key challenge for TVS will be integrating the CNG tank seamlessly into the scooter’s design. The Jupiter 125 CNG’s pricing will likely fall between Rs 93,000 and Rs 1.08 lakh (ex-showroom), placing it in competition with the Bajaj Freedom 125.
The development of the Jupiter 125 CNG signifies a potential shift towards CNG technology in the two-wheeler market. TVS’s entry into this segment, alongside Bajaj, could pave the way for a wider adoption of CNG scooters in India. With its focus on affordability and fuel efficiency, the Jupiter 125 CNG could be a compelling option for eco-conscious scooter buyers.
