|||Cape Town - An ANC Youth League member has called on members to bring their “stones and pangas to “m**r” (assault) the DA” – but ANCYL leaders say he was simply “exercising his right to freedom of speech”.
The Democratic Alliance has now called for the member to retract his “hateful” statements, or face the full wrath of the law.
Responding to a DA picket at the ANC offices in Observatory on Monday, ANCYL and Cosas member Niyaaz Hakim posted on Facebook on Tuesday: “DA has made a wrong move protesting at ANC Provincial Office.
“As young people we will be visiting them with double the amount of their rented crowed and we will not go with empty hands.
“Young people of Cape Town, get your stones and pangas ready...”
He followed this up with: “There won’t be a DA office left when we are done.
“Anyone wearing that blue DA T-shirt will also get moered (assaulted).”
Now the DA is threatening to lay a criminal charge against Hakim for inciting violence.
Cape Metro DA chairperson, Shaun August, said in one week, the ANC have twice shown violence is part of their method.
August said: “First [provincial secretary general] Faiez Jacobs assaults a worker, and now Niyaaz is inciting violence.
“If DA members are going to be harmed, the blood will be on his hands.
“He has until end of day (on Thursday) to publicly withdraw his statement, or we will lay a criminal charge.
ANCYL secretary general Andile Mbali defended Hakim, saying: “He is not inciting violence.
“He was quite simply using his freedom of speech to say he will do anything to protect the ANC. This matter will never stand up in court and we will support him all the way.”
