In an interview with India Today, Sharmin Segal spoke about the particular scene and stated that Alamzeb was laughing at herself. She shared her interpretation of the scene and said that Alamzeb ran away from her house to be with the Nawab but she got rejected for being a part of courtesans. Thus, for her it was like a sad joke cracked on herself. "It was dark humour in my mind," she added. Sharmin Segal also shared that people saw it on small screen and may be that is why not many could notice that she was in tears. "Alamzeb's eyes are welled up, she is sad. It's very different. I am not blaming the medium but everyone watched it on a smaller screen, hence [missed out on details]. Her eyes are welled up, moist, and there is a smile on her face because of the situation, it's like smiling at your misfortune," she said.
Sharmin Segal further emphaised that people behave differently in situations. She added that people associated smile with being happy but people generally smile to mask their emotions/feelings. That's how she interpreted the scene to be. "I just interpreted it as her laughing at herself or smiling at her misfortune. So, that's how I interpreted that scene, and I hope it's clarified now," she said.
