Paris Attack Coverage Boosts CNN, MSNBC, Fox News in November

CNN saw the most growth in cable news in November while the number-one rated Fox News jumped to number 2 in all of basic cable primetime, propelled by its coverage of the Paris terror attacks.

CNN, which an insider told TheWrap spent millions on its Paris coverage, rose in the total day measure by 26 percent compared to the same time last year. The cable news net posted a 10 percent spike in the daytime 25-54 demo as well, according to Nielsen.

Primetime wasn’t as positive for the network as it was flat in total viewers and down 12 percent in the demo year-over-year.

MSNBC continued to climb its way back from the abyss, up 14 percent in total day viewers but down 9 percent in the demo. Same story in primetime: up 8 percent in viewers but down 13 percent.

This performance tracks with TheWrap’s previous report that the new harder news makeover for MSNBC has produced an uptick in viewers, while shrinking in the advertising-coveted demo.

Fox News had a strong month, ranking second basic cable primetime and total day, trailing only ESPN. But compared to last year, the network saw losses.

In the daytime, Fox was flat in viewers and down 11 percent in the demo. In primetime, FNC was down 8 percent in viewers and 14 percent in demo viewers.

Even though primetime was down–in part due to the network’s high ratings during the chaotic Ferguson coverage last year–the “O’Reilly Factor” had its highest-rated month in total viewers in three years; the “Kelly File” delivered its second highest-rated month ever and “Hannity” had its highest rated month since moving to 10 p.m. two years ago.

Noon’s couch-chat fest “Outnumbered” also scored its highest-rated month ever.
