There was a shocking result at a football match in Mauritania after the country’s president got bored and made the game end with a penalty shoot-out, at the 63rd minute!
President of Mauritania Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz was watching the Mauritanian Super Cup Final between FC Teyragh-Zeina and ACS Ksar last weekend.
With the game squared at 1-1, Abdel Aziz apparently grew frustrated with the slow pace of the match and ordered the referee to halt proceedings at the 63rd minute.
To the amazement of the crowd, the referee then signaled for a penalty shoot-out to finish the game.
The pre-mature penalty shoot-out was met with a furious reaction by fans and players alike, who argued that Abdel Aziz could have waited for the end of the second half and the potential extra time to see the actual winner of the match.
However in another bizarre twist, the president of Mauritania’s football federation, Ahmed Ould Abderrahmane Read, has denied that Abdul Aziz intervened at all!
“I deny in the strongest terms the intervention of the president of the republic,” he said.
“The decision was made due to organisational issues in accordance with the presidents and the coaches of the two teams,” his office subsequently said in a statement.
FC Teyragh-Zeina won the shoot-out and were crowned as the champions but ACS Ksar fans have demanded a replay.
