The 18-year old Kardashian star had Twitter in a tizz after she posed seductively in wheelchair on the cover of Interview magazine for their Art Issue. The picture features Jenner in a latex body suit, looking for all intents and purposes, like a disabled sex doll.
The backlash was immediate, questioning why Jenner had reduced the issues of the disabled to a fashion statement.
“Why the hell is this perfectly able bodied woman posing in a wheelchair? Ableism isn't a fashion statement,” inquired on social media post, while another added: “@KylieJenner uses a wheelchair to look edgy. Hmm... is she even doing anything for disability groups or nah #whatever #stopmodeling.'”
Models of Diversity, a group campaigning to broaden the spectrum of models used in the fashion industry called for a debate among its followers over the merits of the picture.
“Is this image of a ABLE @KylieJenner using a wheelchair mocking the disability in fashion argument?”
Interview magazine, however, defended the picture, and voiced their support for artistic freedom and “bold visions” .
“At Interview, we are proud of our tradition of working with great artists and empowering them to realize their distinct and often bold visions.
“The Kylie Jenner cover by Steven Klein, which references the British artist Allen Jones, is a part of this tradition, placing Kylie in a variety of positions of power and control and exploring her image as an object of vast media scrutiny.
“Throughout the Art Issue, we celebrate a variety of women who are both the creators and subjects of their artistic work, and the Kylie feature aims to unpack Kylie‘s status as both engineer of her image and object of attention.
“Our intention was to create a powerful set of pictures that get people thinking about image and creative expression, including the set with the wheelchair. But our intention was certainly not to offend anyone.”
